If you love relaxing in the sun, swimming in warm, crystal-clear water, and watching colorful fish, you don’t need to travel to the other side of the world for that! In Malta, with its stunning beaches, waters in every shade of blue, long summers, and temperatures exceeding 30°C, you’re in for a surprise. The island, nicknamed the “Big Rock,” is home to some incredible beaches. But where can you find them? No worries, here’s a selection of the most beautiful beaches in Malta just for you.
There are few sandy beaches on the island, as most of the coastline is rocky. However, there are still some sandy beaches that are truly worth a visit.
Ghajn Tuffieha
Also known as Riviera Beach, it’s a true paradise on earth and one of the most beautiful beaches in Malta. It’s tucked away in a bay, surrounded by hills. To reach it, you’ll need to walk down a long staircase, and the view from the top is absolutely breathtaking. Note that it is not accessible for people with reduced mobility.
Golden Bay
A large golden sandy beach with sunbeds for rent, bars, beach volleyball courts, and water sports. The water is crystal clear, the setting is idyllic… What more could you ask for?
Gnejna Bay
This small beach is located just after Golden Bay and continues the same paradise-like atmosphere. You can go canoeing, kayaking, paddleboarding, or even rent a pedal boat. Don’t hesitate to rent a kayak to explore the coastline and discover hidden caves and bays.
Mellieha Bay
It’s the largest beach in Malta. Although its setting is less natural than the others, it’s very convenient for those visiting Popeye Village or the Red Tower. A wide range of water activities is available, and you’ll also find restaurants on site. Just be aware that it can get quite crowded in the summer!
Paradise Bay
This beach is a true gem, with its turquoise waters. Located facing the island of Gozo, it requires a bit of a journey, but once you’re there, you’ll discover one of the most popular beaches in Malta, especially during peak season, when every inch of sand is claimed.
Armier Bay
In the north of Malta, this bay offers three small beaches. Less known and more secluded, they’re perfect for escaping the crowds. However, if you don’t have a car, the beach is a bit difficult to reach (expect about a 20-minute walk from the bus stop).
Pretty Bay
It’s one of the few sandy beaches in the south, located in Birzebbuga. Although the scenery is less idyllic due to the port cranes, the beach is very convenient if you’re in the area, with bars and restaurants nearby.
Ramla Bay
One of the most beautiful beaches in Gozo, with its ochre sand. It offers a stunning natural setting for swimming and water activities. There is also a statue of the Virgin at the center of the beach.
San Blas
A small, secluded red sand beach, calm and perfect for relaxation. The water is clear and ideal for snorkeling.
Hondoq Ir Rummien
It’s a small, isolated beach, difficult to access, but it allows you to enjoy crystal-clear, calm water, perfect for snorkeling or swimming.
Santa Marija
If you want to escape the crowds at Blue Lagoon, Santa Marija is about a 20-minute walk away. It’s a lovely beach, less crowded due to its location.
Rocky Coves
Malta has mostly rocky coastlines, which is why it’s nicknamed “The Rock”! But that doesn’t stop you from swimming, quite the opposite!
Delimara
It’s one of our favorite spots in the summer. A large flat white rock terrace with the sea stretching out as far as the eye can see. Don’t forget your mask and snorkel!
Saint Peter’s Pool
A must-visit on excursions in Malta. Saint Peter’s Pool is a rocky cove where the bravest dive into the water from the rocks.
Ghar Lapsi
It’s a small, fairly crowded cove, near the Blue Grotto. If you wander a bit further, you’ll find some great spots for snorkeling!
Mistra Bay
In the north of Malta, this cove is a bit less crowded. But be careful of the pebbles, don’t forget your water sandals!
Wied Il Ghasri
A small cove in the shape of a miniature fjord, accessible by stairs. Make sure to bring water shoes as it’s a pebble beach.
Xlendi Bay
A beautiful bay where it’s lovely to spend time, surrounded by waterfront restaurants where you can taste local specialties. A paved promenade allows you to swim and enjoy the sea.
Dwerja Bay
This is where you’ll find the famous Blue Hole of Gozo and the “Inland Sea.” It’s perfect for diving and snorkeling, especially to explore the remains of the Azure Window, which collapsed in 2017.
Mgarr Ix Xini
A very small cove surrounded by cliffs. It’s difficult to access, but you can go diving or snorkeling there.
Blue Lagoon
The most famous beach in the Maltese archipelago. Turquoise water, a beautiful lagoon, and a deserted island. Be aware that during peak season, it’s often overcrowded, which can make it less enjoyable.
These may not be the most beautiful beaches in Malta, but they allow you to enjoy the sea and the sun without straying too far.
Bugibba
Although the center is lively and noisy, you can swim directly without needing to take the bus. The beach is small, but it’s very popular in the summer.
Sliema Exiles
This swimming spot is located just below the Exiles Cat Park in Sliema. Although it gets quite crowded in the summer, you’re likely to find a spot as the coastline is fairly wide.
Ta’Xbiex
With a stunning view of Valletta, this spot is perfect for a morning swim. Locals come here to spend the day with their families on Sundays, but it’s lovely for a few laps in the morning.
Saint George Bay
This is the beach of Paceville in Saint Julian’s. Very accessible, surrounded by bars and restaurants. However, it gets very crowded during the season, and the water quality leaves something to be desired.
Marsalforn
A beach of sand and pebbles, easily accessible. You can swim and sunbathe while having bars and restaurants nearby.
Beaches in Malta: What to Remember
Malta is lucky to have varied coastlines: sandy beaches, pebbles, rocky shores, and expanses of flat stone. Whether for relaxation, snorkeling, or water activities, it’s a paradise!
However, with the increase in tourists every year, Malta’s beaches can get very crowded, especially in summer. Be sure to carefully choose the time when you visit them!
